The AviClear Laser is an exciting new development in acne treatment. There have been many laser devices that have claimed to improve acne, however in my opinion this is the first to have shown a clear benefit.
The AviClear laser uses a specific 1726 nanometer wavelength of light which is absorbed by sebum (the oil in your skin). This delivers thermal energy directly into the sebaceous glands, heating them up and fundamentally downregulating their function.
Because the overproduction of sebum is an important driver for acne breakouts, reducing the size and output of these oil glands leads to sustained clearance of acne. The AviClear laser aims to replicate the sebaceous-gland-shrinking effects of oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane) but achieves this using light rather than tablet medication.
This makes AviClear a great option for patients that cannot take isotretinoin due to side effects or other medical issues or simply prefer not to take isotretinoin.
An AviClear treatment protocol consists of three 30-minute sessions, spaced one month apart. There is mild discomfort during the treatment and there can be some temporary flare of the acne afterwards. While it is not as effective as isotretinoin, patients can achieve significant improvements which can persist for many years.
