Isotretinoin also known as Accutane or Roaccutane) is an oral derivative of Vitamin A. It is the most powerful and effective medication for the treatment of acne, however it does have the potential for side effects - some of which are serious.
It has a combination of effects that lead to a long term improvement in the skin following a course of treatment:- 1. It drastically shrinks sebaceous glands, reducing facial oil production. 2. It normalizes the shedding of dead skin cells, ensuring pores remain open. 4. It has anti-inflammatory properties.
For a large proportion of patients (over 80%), completing a single carefully calculated course of isotretinoin—usually spanning 6 to 12 months—results in prolonged remission or a permanent cure for their acne.
Due to the potential for side effects, isotretinoin can only be prescribed under the supervision of a consultant dermatologist. It requires regular blood tests to monitor liver function and cholesterol levels.
Common side effects include persistent dryness of the lips, face, and eyes, mood disturbance (anxiety or depression), sexual dysfunction, light sensitivity and liver inflammation.
Isotretinoin causes severe birth malformations and it essential that women do not become pregnant while taking the medicatin or for a minimum of 1 month after stopping it. It is essential to use two concurrent forms of contraception and perform monthly preganncy tests for the duration of the treatment and for one month afterward.
