Retinol

Retinol is one of the most well known skincare ingredient in the world. It is available over-the-counter (OTC) in serums, creams, and oils and is a derivative of Vitamin A. While it is best known for its anti-aging properties, it is also a good option for treating mild acne and improving post-acne skin texture.

Retinol acts much more gradually and is less potent than prescription retinoids. However, this makes it an excellent starting point for patients who have mild, comedonal acne (stubborn blackheads and whiteheads) or those with highly sensitive, dry skin who simply cannot tolerate prescription retinoids.

By gently accelerating cell turnover, retinol unclogs pores and gives the skin a smoother, more radiant appearance. Additionally, it boosts collagen production, which helps shallow acne scars appear less prominent over time.

To use retinol effectively for acne control: * Nighttime Use: Apply it as part of your evening routine to clean, dry skin. * Moisturise: Wait a few minutes after application, then follow with a hydrating, non-comedogenic moisturiser to prevent barrier damage. * Avoid Over-Exfoliating: Do not use retinol in the same routine as strong acids (like AHA/BHA) or benzoyl peroxide, as this can cause severe irritation. * Sun Protection: Always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day, as all vitamin A derivatives make the skin more sensitive to UV light.
